Why Music | Concert Pedagogy?

Given the cultural change, nearly all cultural providers (agencies, opera house, orchestras etc.) are urgently looking for ways to counteract the dwindling audiences which can be observed everywhere, and to win a new audience.
More and more concerts are offered to children in Germany. More and more concert organizers offer presentation for their symphony and chamber concerts and look for new program concepts.
Starting with the winter semester 2008 / 09 the study subject "music management" will be expanded. Aspects of music management will be incorporated into the concert pedagogy study course and concert pedagogy aspects will be incorporated into the future master studies.

Qualifications

The four semester long study course, which can be studied part-time, delivers the required qualifications for the moderation and organisation of family- and children's concerts. This includes concerts for pre-primary children, for the support of educational programs of orchestras and free ensembles, for the time as "Referent" at cultural institutions up to the introduction of Abo-Concerts, and for the design of children's music festivals.

Career centre

The newly-established Career Centre at the academy of music in Detmold aims to accompany and support students on their way into their professional lives. The musical world is one of constant change, the number of permanent positions is shrinking, and job requirements are changing, but nevertheless there are also completely new and multifaceted opportunities opening up for music school graduates. The Career Centre will assist students to meet the new challenges of the musical marketplace, find careers that suit them and will prepare them for those.
In doing so, it takes over three central responsibilities:
Inform: By providing focussed information, the centre will provide the student with an overview of career possibilities, practical stints, festivals, competitions and so on.
Advise: At individual counselling, the students have the opportunity to address their individual and unique questions concerning the topic of finding a career.
Qualify: Skills which go beyond the curricula of the individual study courses are taught during seminars and workshops. These include topics such as applying for a job, business start-up, legal aspects, insurance, marketing oneself or even training for auditions.

Optimal synergies are developed by the close collaboration between the departments of musical education, music management and musicians' health.

Short Cuts

The Music Academy Detmold is located in the centre of Detmold.

Due to central and especially reasonable living options, short distances to the university locations and the centre of the town are guaranteed. The practicing on instruments, in one's own four walls is obviously allowed in most cases.

Second subject
The short distances and easy connections are an advantage for students who study music education and another subject either in Paderborn or Bielefeld.

Library Center
From 2013 on there will be a new Library Center. It will consist of the library of the Musicology Institute, the library of the Hochschule für Musik and the music section of the Lippische Landesbibliothek. This will make it one of the biggest music libraries in Germany. There will be as well 22 new practice rooms.

Dormitory
The dormitory in Detmold is in the immediate vicinity of the Hochschule für Musik. It has 45 rooms, which include a small kitchen unit, shower and toilet. If you cannot find a practice room at the school, you can use the ones in the dormitory.

Child care center
Starting in 2012, the Hochschule für Musik will have a day care center. Currently there is a care facility called "Paulinchen" that is shared by students and staff of the Hochschule für Musik Detmold and the University of Applied Sciences OWL.
