Accordion

The Accordion study programme, established in 2009, trains musicians who want to give accordion concerts or teach the instrument. This major artistic subject area emphasises mastering as wide a repertoire as possible. The course consists of building a repertoire and working at different acoustic and playing techniques so that the student has the opportunity to explore the possibilities of their instrument. A further goal of the training is to create a musical and stylistic understanding of the accordion literature for solo and chamber music, and of arrangements from different stylistic periods. The study programme emphasises both traditional and contemporary works. The study of contemporary music is the emphasis of the FONA project, ‘Formation Neues Akkordeon’, which promotes research into the acoustics of the modern accordion with all its facets and the artistic practice of its repertoire, and a commitment to this is one of the stated goals of HfM’s accordion class. Supplementary classes offer students the opportunity to venture into other areas, such as the elective jazz course. The students learn the basic elements of jazz improvisation, which will have fundamental importance for their future work as freelance musicians. HfM’s accordion class has won prizes at the Klingenthal Accordion Competition and the Spanish Arrasate Hiria Accordion Competition, in addition to winning inter-college competitions and numerous grants; all of these achievements are testimony to its high artistic standards.

Guitar

The most recent instruments to be adopted as part of Detmold University of Music’s classical study programme have been the guitar and the saxophone, and these have now become an established part of HfM’s everyday musical programme. With a few exceptions they are not orchestral instruments, so they tend to be involved more in chamber music activities. The reputation of the Detmold guitar class is closely associated with the Amadeus Guitar Duo, one of the most high-profile of all guitar duos. Former guitar class students are to be found on the teaching staff of colleges all over the world. Instruction focusses on a wide repertoire of solo works, chamber music and contemporary music, in addition to 300 concertos written expressly for guitar.

Saxophone

Study of the classical saxophone at Detmold began at the end of the 1980s. The first Chair of Classical Saxophone in Germany was established in 1997 at the Dortmund campus of Detmold University of Music. The repertoire of the saxophone forms a broad arc reaching from the French and American Schools to contemporary music today. The students have opportunities for ensemble playing within the saxophone class. In 2017 a concert examination for classical saxophone was introduced at Detmold University of Music.
