Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy

Unfortunately, the overview is only available in German so far. Please consider the panel "Auf einen Blick" here.
Detmold University of Music offers a modern instrumental and singing study programme. With its basis in sound artistic vocal or instrumental development, it is well-known for preparing students to face the many and varied challenges of their future working life. The instrumental teachers it has trained teach at state, municipal and private training institutions (music schools, music colleges or music academies) or as self-employed tutors. During their study course, cooperative and forms of working, together with individual supervision and encouragement, ensure that attention is given to individual strengths and weaknesses. As part of a careful career development process, there is an ongoing dialogue between student and teacher in order to observe the student’s personality development and bring out its main features. There are different options for in-depth study in the fields of elementary music pedagogy, whole class music making, Jazz-Rock-Pop, musicology, theory/aural training, a second main instrument, singing or music communication. Detmold University of Music cooperates not only with the schools and music schools in the area, but also with numerous freelance instrumental and singing teachers, so that work placements and student projects form a regular part of the study programme. One aspect worth mentioning is the career-related practical placements, when students work in adjacent fields of activity, receiving new ideas and finding out about current conditions in the job market. This rich array of opportunities means that graduates are now teaching at music schools throughout Germany and right across Europe. Students’ creative projects include the ‘Bach by Bike’ initiative, the Detmold music and art school ‘GlasHaus’ and even innovative music school foundations outside Europe. Still others are following an academic route and are to be found in key locations, researching issues of current interest in the teaching of instruments.
Encouraging a life-long approach to learning music constitutes an integral part of the training of instrumental teachers. In order that students can get a feel for how older people experience their physical situation, we have a teaching aid called the ‘Age Man’. This is an ageing research suit which has been tried out in businesses, in medical training and with social and nursing professionals, and is now being used in music education. The students can put on the special suit and discover what music making feels like as an older person. They experience for themselves changes such as the diminishing ability to hear, a reduced sense of touch and decreasing strength. A flagship project linked with this was a musical workshop weekend entitled ‘Amateur Music Making at 55+’, which attempted to discover the chamber music contexts in which older musical lay people move. In November 2015 the participants were tutored by some of our students and were able to test and improve their chamber music skills in mixed ensembles. The findings were scientifically reviewed and have been published under the title ‘Chamber Music at 55+. Bringing people together: an empirical analysis and a practical workshop’.
