Conducting

Unfortunately, the overview is only available in German so far. Please consider the panel "Auf einen Blick" here.

The Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses in Choral and Orchestral Conducting focus on training young people to become conducting personalities who will rehearse and conduct at an outstanding level. The students are encouraged to develop into artistically independent interpreters of choral and orchestral music. During their period of study they are given opportunities to work with HfM’s instrumental and vocal ensembles as well as with professional orchestras. The objectives of the study programme are to perfect their conducting technique and to achieve an effective rehearsal methodology, stylistically sound interpretation and authentic handling of ensembles. To achieve these objectives, members of the teaching faculty work with the students in small groups, in one-to-one tuition and in rehearsals and concerts with video analysis follow-up. In each semester students conduct concerts with a symphonic or oratorio repertoire, working with a range of different choirs and orchestras. Helping with opera productions and acting as assistant conductor gives students first-hand experience of the musical theatre repertoire. Students on the orchestral conducting study programme gain practical experience by working with orchestras such as the Northwest German Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the Landestheater Detmold, the Detmold Chamber Orchestra and other professional ensembles. Detmold University of Music’s Chamber Choir or a professional vocal ensemble are available for rehearsals and final exam concerts given by students on the choral conducting study programme.

In the 2017/18 Winter Semester a Master’s degree programme in conducting was established at Detmold University of Music. Practical experience is given top priority, in that students undertake a project chosen from the fields of opera, oratorio or children’s concerts. The students are given an opportunity of working with a professional ensemble over an extended period. In the orchestral field, working partnerships are being developed with the five orchestras from the region, and intensive workshops with orchestras from outside Detmold are being planned.
