Repertoire

Repertoire Preselection by video recording (maximum 15 minutes playing time)

  • An intermezzo by Johannes Brahms from Op. 76, 116, 117, 118, 119
  • A virtuoso étude by a composer of the applicant’s choice
  • A composition of the applicant’s choice by any composer (except Brahms)

The video recording should not be older than one year.

1st round (maximum 30 minutes playing time)

  • A sonata by Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Clementi or Schubert
  • One or several works by Brahms. Any composition is permitted, including the transcriptions after Bach, Gluck, Chopin or Weber. Excerpts from cycles (Op. 10, 39, 76, 116–119) may also be played.

2nd round (maximum 45 minutes playing time)

1. One of the following compositions by Johannes Brahms:

  • One of the sonatas, Op. 1, Op. 2 or Op. 5
  • Four Ballades, Op. 10
  • Schumann Variations Op. 9
  • Variations, Op. 21, Nos. 1 and 2
  • Handel Variations, Op. 24
  • Paganini Variations, Op. 35 (Books I and II)
  • Sixteen Waltzes, Op. 39

2. One or several works of the competitor’s choice (not by Brahms) Competitors who play one or more works by Reger, Schönberg, Berg, Webern, Hindemith or Bartók in this round will be eligible for the Detmold University of Music Foundation's special prize.

Semi-final (maximum 50 minutes playing time)

1. One of the following compositions by Johannes Brahms:

  • Piano Pieces, Op. 76
  • Fantasies, Op. 116
  • Intermezzi, Op. 117 and Rhapsodies, Op. 79
  • Piano Pieces, Op. 118
  • Piano Pieces, Op. 119

2. One or several works of the competitor’s choice (not by Brahms)

Final with the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie (Conductor: Florian Ludwig)

One of the following piano concertos: Op. 15 or Op. 83 by Brahms

The compositions from the preselection may be played again in the competition. Further duplications in the repertoire are not permitted. Individual movements from sonatas are only permitted in point 3 of the video preselection. Excerpts from cyclical compositions may be played, providing this is standard concert practice (e.g. selection of preludes by Debussy, excerpts from Ravel’s Miroirs, etc.). The jury reserves the right to stop the performance if the maximum playing time is exceeded.
