Martin Christian Vogel was born in Chemnitz. He began his musical education as a member of the Thomaner Choir in Leipzig. After high school, he studied theology at the Karl Marx University of Leipzig and obtained a diploma. Subsequently, he studied singing at the Leipzig College of Music, where he also obtained a diploma. While still studying, Vogel became vocal coach at the Thomaner Choir and joined the Leipzig Opera House as tenorbuffo and lyrical tenor. After performing for ten years in the local ensemble (among others, as David in the Mastersingers of Nürnberg by Wagner; as Ferrando in Mozart's Cosi fan tutte; as Tamino in Mozart's Magic Flute; as Prince in Prokofiev's Liebe zu den drein Orangen; and as Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni), Martin Christian Vogel and his family moved to Berlin (West) in 1989 and there he committed himself to the German Opera. As tenor, Vogel sang, amongst others, in the Semper Opera Dresden and the German State Opera in Berlin. Festivals, concerts, vocal evenings, radio, TV, and record productions have taken him to many countries in Europe, as well as to Japan, the USA and Israel. Vogel is a popular lecturer at further educational institutes and at master classes.

In 1991 he was appointed Professor of Singing at the Detmold University of Music. From 1997 to 2001 he functioned as the Dean of the Detmold University. Since 1999 he is chairperson of the association Initiative Detmold Summer Theatre (registered association). From 2000 to 2003, Vogel was the President of the German Association of Singing Teachers and was elected Rector of the Detmold University of Music in 2001. In June 2008, he was unanimously reinstated in this position for a further six years by the Senate. He is a board member of the Liz Mohn Culture and Music Foundation, as well as on the board of trustees for the Investment Kreis Lippe Foundation and the Evangelical Congregation Foundation Lippe.
