Martin Christoph Redel was born in 1947 in Detmold, son of flautist Kurt Redel and pianist Erika Redel-Seidler. He studied percussion at the Nordwestdeutschen Music Academy Detmold under Friedrich Scherz, as well as composition under Rudolf Kelterborn, Giselher Klebe and Johannes Driessler. He subsequently went to the Hannover University of Music to Isang Yun. He has been Lecturer of Music Theory and Ear Training at the Detmold University of Music since 1971 and he has been Professor of Composition Teaching since 1979.

With university colleagues he formed the Ensemble Kontraste between 1974 and 1984 to turn attention to contemporary music. Since 1974 he has been holding courses from Jeunesses Musicales and competitions; Young Composers and Meet Young Composers at Schloß Weikersheim. Since 1992, Redel has been the national chairperson of the Jeunesses Musicales Germany where he has also been active as a soloist. Between 1993-98 he was elected Rector of the Detmold University of Music. From 1996-2001 he led the rector conference of all the music universities in Germany.

For his work, which has been performed in many countries around the world, as well as been recorded in diverse radio stations and productions, the composer has been awarded the following prizes:

• 1971 - Annette von Droste-Hülshof prize of the Landschaftsverbandes, Westfalen-Lippe

• 1972 - Music prize of the regional capital Stuttgart (Dispersion for Chamber Ensemble)

• 1973 - Music prize for Young Artists from Nordrhein-Westfalen

• 1977 - Music prize for composition from the Walter Kaminski Memorial Fund (String Quartet II) - Music prize of the city of Mannheim for Young Artists (along with Wolfgang Rihm) - Special Prize by Music Critics for Rassegna Internazionale GINO MARINUZZI per Giovani Compositori in San Remo/Italy (Stanzas for Orchestra)

• 1978 - Composition prize for Summer Music Days Hitzacker (String Quartet II)

- Music prize of the Culture Prize Schlesien from Niedersachsen

• 1979 - Mention d'Honneur at the Prix Arthur Honegger, Paris (String Quartet II)
