Monika Bovenkerk completed her studies in Instrumental Pedagogy in the subjects of piano and recorder, under Josef-Matthias Blome at the Detmold University of Music, Department Dortmund. She completed her graduate musical education in recorder studies with honours, under Friedrich Schmidtmann in 1975. She performs regularly as recorder soloist in concerts with different orchestras, and in 1999 she founded the Baroque ensemble Harmonica Respiro. The harpsichord, as permanent companion of the recorder, increasingly became a challenge for Monika Bovenkerk, and led to an intensive analysis of bass playing, leading her artistic activities to increasingly include responsibilities of continuo player. A fascination with the expressive possibilities of the human voice and polyphonic vocal music lead to the founding of the vocal ensemble Cantio Sacra. In 1979, Monika Bovenkerk was appointed Professor of Recorder at the Detmold University of Music.
