Karl-Heinz Bloemeke studied at the Detmold University of Music under Professor Martin Stephani and Professor Gustav König and furthered his education with studies under Hans Swarowsky (Vienna) and Franco Ferrara (Rome).
His first appearance as conductor was with the Bielefeld City Theatre and with the Coburg State Theatre. In 1978, at the age of 29, he was appointed deputy general music director at the Darmstadt State Theatre and was in the same position with the Mannheim National Theatre from 1981 to 1985. In the same year he was appointed Professor of Conducting at the Academy of Music in Detmold.. In 1987 the choir of the Urban Music Association Gütersloh elected Karl-Heinz Bloemeke as artistic director.
As guest conductor he appeared in major German opera houses like the Hannover State Theatre, the Frankfurt Opera and the Karlsruhe State Theatre. He went on international tours throughout Europe as well as the USA. From 1990 to 1997 he was the permanent conductor of the German Oper-am-Rhein.
Since 1991, Professor Bloemeke has been chief conductor of the Essen Folkwang Chamber Orchestra as well as permanent conductor of the Berlin Symphony Orchestra. He also had a standing collaboration with the Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra and the Mannheim National Theatre.
