Practical and Career Oriented Training

At the beginning of the winter semester 2011/12, the teacher training at the Detmold College of Music will switch to the Bachelor/Master Structure. The studies enable students to acquire the artistic and scientific basics for independent performance of their teaching duties in grammar schools and comprehensive schools, with the necessary professional, didactic and pedagogic skills, and enable them to practice and reflect these in their earliest practical experiences.

The following teaching courses are available:

  • Teaching in grammar schools and comprehensive schools (GyGe, LA I) with music as the main subject. Degrees acquired: Bachelor of Education und Master of Education.
  • Teaching in grammar schools and comprehensive schools (GyGe, LA II) with music as an additional subject. Degrees acquired: Bachelor of Education und Master of Education
  • Examination regulations for a bachelor's degree at grammar schools and comprehensive schools with Music (LA 1) as the main subject and Music (LA II) as an additional subject.
  • Examination regulations for a master's degree at grammar schools and comprehensive schools with Music (LA 1) as the main subject and Music (LA II) as an additional subject.

Within the framework of studies (GyGe, LA I), one of the following can be studied as the second teaching subject: Chemistry, German, English, French, History, Mathematics, Physics and Protestant and Catholic Religion

Educational Sciences can either be studied in Detmold or Paderborn, as you prefer.

The general length of studies for all teaching degrees is ten semesters. Six of these are devoted to the bachelor's phase and four to the master's phase.

Lecturers in the study course

For decades, Detmold is one of the leading German training schools in instructing music teachers for general education schools. This is not only attributed due to well-known personalities such as Karl Heinrich Ehrenforth, Wolfgang Schmidt-Brunner and Ernst Klaus Schneider whose pedagogical impulses were also effective far beyond the university and still influence the teaching practice today.

Currently the tradition of teaching instruction at the academy is modelled along a life orientation model. The course is being instructed and further developed by the lecturers Prof. Dr. Ortwin Nimczik (head of the stream) and Prof. Dr. Ekkehard Mascher. as well as Prof. v. Adam-Schmidtmeier. Prof. Dr. Markus Brenk is lecturing pedagogy.

Pedagogy House

The pedagogy house is a building accessed by student musicians, instrumental pedagogs and music transferors. It is open from 07h00 to 24h00 for lectures, practise sessions and trials for any registered student at the academy with an appropriate identity card.

The building which is located on the top half of the palace garden, has been fully equipped to the highest standard (two wings per major room, W-Lan, media systems, etc.) and therewith forms an ideal central point for academic and artistic work.

Short Cuts

The Music Academy Detmold is located in the centre of Detmold.

Due to central and especially reasonable living options, short distances to the university locations and the centre of the town are guaranteed. The practicing on instruments, in one's own four walls is obviously allowed in most cases.

Second subject
The short distances and easy connections are an advantage for students who study music education and another subject either in Paderborn or Bielefeld.

Library Center
From 2013 on there will be a new Library Center. It will consist of the library of the Musicology Institute, the library of the Hochschule für Musik and the music section of the Lippische Landesbibliothek. This will make it one of the biggest music libraries in Germany. There will be as well 22 new practice rooms.

Dormitory
The dormitory in Detmold is in the immediate vicinity of the Hochschule für Musik. It has 45 rooms, which include a small kitchen unit, shower and toilet. If you cannot find a practice room at the school, you can use the ones in the dormitory.

Child care center
Starting in 2012, the Hochschule für Musik will have a day care center. Currently there is a care facility called "Paulinchen" that is shared by students and staff of the Hochschule für Musik Detmold and the University of Applied Sciences OWL.
