Campus

The Hochschule has ten specifically equipped buildings at its disposal, which are arranged as a campus in and around the imposing Palais Gardens: string-players, wind-instruments, singers and percussionists have their own buildings; pianists and organists reside in the historic palace, where rehearsals and concerts for larger chamber music groups also take place. The musicologists work in an Art Nouveau building at the outskirts of the gardens, whereas music-education students and future music teachers hold their academic seminars in the technically excellently equipped Pädagogikhaus.

Also at the fringe of the campus, opera students may use the historic Sommertheater, to gain concert experience and the taste of a fully staged opera performance. The Erich Thienhaus Institute is built directly onto the large concert hall, which lies in the shadow of magnificent trees. The concert hall is equipped with a unique spatial audio rendering technique (Wave Field Synthesis).

Programs

One may study in Detmold to become a composer, orchestral musician, pianist, opera-, recital- and oratorio-singer, conductor, church musician, music teacher - either in a school or as a teacher for voice or instrumental training. Students at the Hochschuloe für Musik Detmold may receive additional orchestral experience within the Orchesterzentrum in Dortmund. The courses of study are regularly reconsidered to react quickly to a permanently shifting professional environment. The united identity of faculty, students and administration has been moulded by the Hochschule into a Mission Statement, that is part of the Zielvereinbarungen, agreed on with the government of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Tradition

180 artists and teachers who work here, as well as the many national and international partners of the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, lay an optimal foundation for the musical education of their students in the tradition of the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie, as the Hochschule once was called. As a result, students from Detmold are very often found among prize-winners in competitions. They are represented not only in the contemporary classical music scene on all important opera houses and orchestras, but also work worldwide in prominent positions as teachers in universities, academies and music schools.

Musical Training

In Detmold, particular attention has always been paid towards the practical application of musical training. The Hochschule für Musik presents more than 400 concerts per year in multiple concert halls, a studio theatre, and even two professional theatres and an exceptionally involved population of the city follows these performances with lively interest. Thus a study at the Hochschule provides an extraordinary practical performance experience of real-life quality. Numerous citizens of Detmold are engaged with the Detmold Oratorio Choir, which - in contrast to the all students chamber choir - performs oratorio literature on a larger scale.

Institutions

Once a year the Detmold Summer Academy makes a special contribution to promote highly talented young musicians in Germany: In cooperation with the federal competition Jugend musiziert Detmold faculty as well as various guest conductors offer open masterclasses and build an extraordinary orchestra out of the prize-winners of the above mentioned competition. In its first year (2004), Kurt Masur was the musical director.

Promotion of the highly talented also finds a concentrated accent in the newly-founded Detmolder Hochbegabtenzentrum (DHZ). In weekend courses young, extremely talented musicians are wholly prepared for their carreer. This takes place in cooperation with the Institute for Research on Musical Ability, which has its home at the University of Paderborn. The education aims for an unusual sccope, not only artistically, but also for a development of the entire personality.

The Erich Thienhaus Institute of the Hochschule für Musik Detmold is a highly specialized training ground for tonmeisters, who are responsible for the technical presentation of a musical performance. The institute has an international reputation. Following its example similar institutes have been founded all over the world. Tonmeisters trained in Detmold occupy leading positions in the recording industry worldwide.

With the Musicology Seminar Detmold/Paderborn an internationally renowned institute is available to students in Detmold. It is operated in conjunction with the University of Paderborn. Students of artistic and pedagogical subjects benefit from the proximity of the musicologists - and vice versa.
